Teen Health
Healthy teens means healthy adults. Avoiding sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancy gives our teens a greater chance for success in life. The Teen Health Network tracks HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, and teen pregnancies.
The Center for Disease Control estimates that 50% of all new HIV infections occur in people 25 years old and younger. Two thirds of all sexually transmitted infections (STI’s) occur in people 24 years of age or younger. Of those, one third are teenagers. St. Lucie County teens have a higher rate of gonorrhea, Chlamydia and AIDS than the state average.
The Teen Health Network was instrumental in a comprehensive sexual education curriculum being implemented in the schools. The Network also holds a teen friendly health clinic called the “Teen Zone” twice a month that provides pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease testing and prevention education. It also provides nutrition and diet information.
When our children succeed the community succeeds!
